Heatwave shuts Swansea cafe temporarily because it's too hot to work

A popular café in Tycoch has had to keep its doors closed today following health concerns around the heatwave.

Bluebell Coffee and Kitchen is a family owned business along Carnglas Road run by siblings, Sophia and Tim Joannides.

The venue made the decision following the Met Office issuing an amber warning for extreme heat in Wales earlier in the week.

"Since last week it's just been getting warmer, our staff have been struggling. It's difficult to breathe with a mask on and it's made even worse when it's boiling" said Sophia.

Check the weather for your area:

Following a decision to close the café early yesterday (Wednesday, July 21), Sophia met with the supervisor and chef to discuss how best to deal with the situation.

"With it being hot in the main area, it's even hotter in the kitchen with the ovens. We decided the best option was to close It was getting too much for our staff and they couldn't work properly" she said.

The café is not the only food and drinks venue struggling to cope with the heat with a restaurant in Saundersfoot also closing for health reasons. Another in Caerphilly has also closed for similar reasons.

These closures come as a blow to businesses which have already suffered severe disruption due to repeated lockdowns and other Covid meaures.

"We've been busy and the staff have been under a lot of stress accompanied by the heat, it meant we had to give them a few days to cool down. It's a shame to have to shut because of lockdown and now this," said Sophia.

The Tycoch-based business hopes to re-open its doors tomorrow - July 23 - on a trial basis to see if the weather does cool down.
