Heatwave set to hit Britain 'within weeks' as warm spell continues across country

Britain is set to enjoy a lot more sunshine over the coming weeks, with a heatwave predicted by weather experts.

The warm weather in England and Wales looks like it will continue and it won't be long until we're sizzling, a leading weather expert has claimed.

After what has been the coldest start to April in eight years, it's great news for sunseekers with the chilly spell well and truly at an end.

Wednesday is expected to be cooler slightly before a warm end of the week.

The North East could even see daytime lows of 8C on Wednesday, while things aren't much better in the South before a big improvement on Thursday and Friday.

It comes as some forecasters say this summer could be the hottest in over a decade, reports The Mirror.

The mercury could hit 32C inside a few weeks in some parts of the country – which should mean a scorcher over the May Bank Holiday.

Meteorologist Jim Dale claims some very warm weather is in front of us.

"There will definitely be some spikes of heat as we go into summer when I expect to see temperatures in the high 20Cs or even the low 30Cs," the British Weather Services expert said.

"This is largely because of a balancing effect which, after the colder period of weather over the past couple of months, dominated by a northerly airflow, should revert and come from a more southerly direction.

"This will bring more in the way of hotter weather as we go through the end of spring and into summer.

"This summer could be up there with the warmer ones from the past 10 years, it is more likely to turn out one of the warmer ones that to be cooler."

Until the temperatures soar, the Met Office says we should expect cold evenings, with frost possible.

It will be dry for most with spells of warm sunshine and light winds.

The Met Office said: "A settled regime will likely be in place across much of the country at first with high pressure likely to be centred to the west or northwest of the UK during this time.

"However, there is the threat of some rain and a few showers in the North and East.

"There's a small chance more unsettled conditions with heavier showers could move up from the south to impact southern areas.

"There are the continued threats of rural frost and patchy fog where winds fall light."

North East weather forecast

Wednesday:

A cloudy start but a fine day to follow, with lengthy sunny spells developing.

Feeling noticeably colder than Tuesday, especially near coasts with an onshore breeze, but this will be offset somewhat by the warm sunshine. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Wednesday night:

Dry overnight with long clear spells and winds falling generally light.

This will allow temperatures to drop with a widespread frost developing. Minimum temperature -3 °C.

Thursday:

Dry and fine with long sunny spells. Warmer than Wednesday with winds lighter and more variable. Maximum temperature 15 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Continuing dry with pleasantly warm sunny spells but also cloudier at times, especially near the coast where feeling cooler at times. Frost still likely overnight where skies clear.
