Heatwave set for Easter Bank Holiday Monday in Newcastle - while there is flooding in Spain and Portugal

Temperature records could be smashed in the UK this Easter - while rain is forecast in Spain and Portugal.

Saturday was the warmest day so far this year, with temperatures around 10C higher in many places around the country compared with the average.

Newcastle saw temperatures of 23C, compared to an average of 11C for this time of year.

And there is more warmth to come.

Dry, sunny and very warm conditions are forecast for Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.

Wall-to-wall sunshine with highs of 22C are expected on Sunday with more heat on bank holiday Monday with temperatures around 16-17C.

But holidaymakers in Europe could be missing out on the Easter sunshine.

The Met Office revealed that it is "a different story" on the Iberian Peninsula where conditions are expected to be chilly and unsettled over the coming days.

Met Office forecaster Helen Roberts said that rain and possible flooding is expected in Spain and Portugal, adding: "This time of year is the Easter holidays so there are many people who are on their holidays. The temperature in Madrid on Monday and Tuesday is just 12C, which is a significant contrast to the UK."

Bookmaker Ladbrokes has cut odds from 5/6 to just 8/11 for this year to see the hottest Easter Sunday on record.

The UK's warmest Easter Sunday temperature was 25.3C on Easter Sunday in 2011.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "Brits have been treated to a scorching start to the Easter weekend and things will only get hotter if the latest odds are anything to go by."

As workers return to the office on Tuesday and children start back at school for a new term, the weather is expected to cool down.

There will be sunny spells on Tuesday with highs of 12-13C and by mid-week overcast skies and light rain showers are forecast.
