Heatwave forces museums and businesses to close doors across the North East

We are in the clutch of a national heatwave with soaring temperatures putting pressure on businesses.

Pubs, cafes, museums and libraries across the North East have been forced to close or change their usual plans amidst the sizzling temperatures.

Due to power issues, Beamish Open Air museum in County Durham will be closed this Tuesday.

Beamish Museum shared a message on Monday night and said: "We’ve been informed tonight by Northern Powergrid of multiple faults affecting the power supply to the museum and across the wider area, which means that unfortunately we’ll be unable to open the museum tomorrow (Tuesday, 19th July).

"We apologise for any inconvenience and we thank you for your understanding due to this issue, which is outside of our control during the current extreme weather conditions.

"We are contacting ticketholders by email who were booked to visit us and we’ll keep everyone updated on our social media and website."

The People's Theatre in Newcastle has also made changes to tonight's performance ahead of the unusually warm weather.

Newcastle Lit & Phil library is also closing earlier than usual. It said: "Due to today's high temperatures, the Library will be closing at 5pm. Keep cool, and we will see you tomorrow."

Ernest, a cafe and bar in Ouseburn has also decided to closed its doors out of staff safety concerns.

They said: "We’ve decided to close Ernest tomorrow and Tuesday! (18/19 July) as we want our staff to be able to enjoy some of the nice weather rather than be exhausted working in it!! (They’ve all had a mega busy weekend working through the Ouseburn festival & @theouseburnmarket).

"@ernie.ouseburn will be open with shorter hours (8-3) for all your cold beers, ice creams, sarnies, salads & other sunshine treats!! We’ll be back open on Wednesday as usual.

"Ps. We’ll put our outside seating out as normal so you can still come and grab your lunch from ernie and sit outside if you can’t stay away from us! Hopefully see you out in the sunshine, stay safe & look after yourself!!!"

The Rat Inn in Anick have also decided to shut as a result of high temperatures in their kitchen.

It said: "We tried but it’s just too hot! Open again on Wednesday- apologies to everyone disappointed."
