Heatwave and lack of water stops Scots whisky production

Whisky makers have put a temporary stop to production because of low water levels caused by the dry weather.

Inver House Distillers, which owns the Old Pulteney brand, says it’s doing all it can to manage the situation “in the best interests of the local environment and community” at the Pulteney Distillery, in Wick, Caithness, which draws water from Loch Hempriggs.

There are problems with water across Scotland due to the hot summer we have had this year.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) say Wick remains in ‘significant’ scarcity for water for the fifth week in a row.

Moderate scarcity also exists in Thurso and Orkney with the Outer Hebrides, parts of southern Scotland and areas in the northeast remaining at Alert.

Some areas in the south west and north have seen improvement but large cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow, are either on ‘alert’ or ‘early warning’ for drought conditions.
