Heaton killer Geoffrey Bulman headbutted, punched and poked partner's eye in the same house he beat his dad to death

A convicted killer is back behind bars for headbutting, punching and poking his partner in the eye in the house where he took his dad's life.

Geoffrey Bulman was jailed for six years in 2016 for the manslaughter of his dad, George, after suspecting him of having sex with his partner, raining multiple blows on the 71-year-old, including when he was lying in bed. He was originally charged with murder but was cleared of that.

Bulman was recalled to prison in 2018 for harassing an ex partner but after getting out he began a relationship with another woman, who he had been with for around three weeks in August last year. Newcastle Crown Court heard things were fine to begin with but he turned jealous and aggressive and smashed her phone, giving her a replacement which he would answer for her.

On August 24 last year he took her phone away from her and she ended up staying at his home. Eleanor Fry, prosecuting, said: "She was scared to leave on her own because he had threatened her.

"He was aggressive and controlling, hiding belongings, threatening her, saying abusive things, suggesting she had been doing improper or illegal acts with children or family members. He assaulted himself by hitting himself with a gas canister and headbutting a coffee table, saying he would blame her. He also cut himself and said he would blame her."

On August 29 they were in bed when he suddenly headbutted her for no reason and punched her in the mouth, causing her forehead and mouth to bleed. The following day he punched her five times in the face and poked her in the eye, leaving her covered in blood.

Her eye was left blackened and bruised with blood on the eyeball and her nose was swollen and suspected to be broken. When her friend saw the state of her, she alerted police.

The court heard the victim, who used to have a successful career, was vulnerable as she had become alcohol dependent. As a result of Bulman's behaviour, she was left suicidal and needed an intervention from a crisis team. She lives near him and was left scared in case he tried to contact her.

Bulman, 53, of Stratford Grove, Heaton, Newcastle, who has 24 previous convictions, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one of criminal damage. Judge Edward Bindloss said he poses a high risk of harm, particularly to those he is in a relationship with.

He was jailed for 41 months with an extended licence period of a further one year and seven months. He was also give a restraining order for ten years, banning him from contacting the victim or her friend.

Deborah Smithies, defending, said Bulman had special educational needs as a child and still struggles with literacy and numeracy. She added that he is "mild-mannered" when sober and has respiratory problems.
