Heatmap estimates almost 10,000 active coronavirus cases across Bristol

A study tracking active cases of symptomatic coronavirus across the UK has predicted there are nearly 10,000 across the city.

New data from the COVID Symptom Study, an app which tracks people with symptoms of the virus across the country, suggests that 593,469 Brits are currently infected with "symptomatic Covid", as of 5am today (Monday, November 9).

The map relies on submissions from users documenting their symptoms, so is able to track active cases in which symptoms are being shown.

The Bristol city region alone has nearly 6,000 active cases of the virus, according to the study.

It predicts that there are 5,591 active cases as of the update this morning, with cases coming at a rate of 12,156 cases per million people.

The rate of cases in each area predicts how many active cases there would be in a population of a million people at the rate currently seen in the area.

The South Gloucestershire region also has a rate above 10,000 cases per million, with 2,836 cases now being reported in the region.

North Somerset is the least affected of the three major Bristol regions but still has 1,360 active cases, according to the map.

The rate in North Somerset also sits at 6,436, which while much lower than the other two regions is still comfortably within the top tier that the map measures.

The current active cases in Bristol

The heatmap showing the current level of cases in Bristol (Covid Symptom Study)

The number of estimated active cases in Bristol and its surrounding areas, with the rate of active cases per million people in brackets, is as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 5,591 (12,156 per 1,000,000)
  • South Gloucestershire - 2,836 (10,120 per 1,000,000)
  • North Somerset - 1,360 (6,436 per 1,000,000)

These figures take into account estimated cases involving patients that have not been tested for COVID-19, which is why in some cases, they differ from the actual confirmed number of cases by Public Health England.
