Heathrow cheers rise in revenues and passenger numbers

A record 61 million people passed through Heathrow’s terminals in the first nine months of the year, the airport said on Friday as it reported sales growth.

Britain’s biggest airport, which plans to build a third runway, was bullish as it cheered a 0.7% rise in passengers.

Revenues in the nine months to September 30 rose 4.1% to £2.3 billion, helped by higher demand for long-haul trips.

Stripping out one-off costs, underlying profits rose 1.3% to £1.5 billion.

Finance chief Javier Echave said Heathrow had a limited financial impact from airlines giant IAG cancelling almost all BA flights over a 48-hour period last month because of pay strikes.

He added that Heathrow is working hard to avoid strike action by 4000 of its own employees. Union Unite will ballot members next week on a new proposed pay package.

Echave also said it will be “business as usual” at Heathrow once Britain leaves the EU.
