Heathrow Airport boss issues statement as travel rules for amber countries eased from July 19

Heathrow Airport has issued a statement after the government announced plans to ease travel restrictions for people who have been fully vaccinated.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps confirmed on Thursday that holidaymakers from the UK who have received two jabs will no longer be required to self-isolate for 10 days on their return to England from destinations on the amber list.

People aged under 18 will also be exempted from the requirement and the guidance not to travel to countries on the amber list will be lifted from July 19

People returning from holidays from amber destinations will still be required to take a Covid-19 test three days before returning.

The announcement has been welcomed by Heathrow CEO, John Holland-Kaye - but he warned 'the job isn’t done'.

Mr Holland-Kaye said: "This is excellent news that will give a much-needed boost to millions of people across Britain looking forward to a more normal summer and reuniting with family and friends abroad.

“But the job isn’t done. To really kickstart the UK’s economic recovery, global Britain needs to get trading again.

“US business can get to the EU, but the UK remains cut off.

“The UK should open up travel to fully vaccinated people from more countries – particularly our key partners in the US – by the end of July.

“If the EU can do it, so can the UK. We’re working closely with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic to demonstrate it can be done safely, with checks on departure, and no need for delays at immigration on arrival.”

Heathrow Airport announced earlier this week that they will provide fast-track lanes for fully vaccinated arrivals from amber list countries.

Passengers will be able to upload their vaccine certificate before boarding a flight.

Upon arriving at the airport, they will be directed to the new fast lanes to allow them to pass immigration delays.

The scheme will initially involve fully vaccinated volunteers travelling on selected flights from Athens, Los Angeles, Montego Bay, Jamaica, and New York.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid announced this week that people in England who have been double jabbed will no longer have to self-isolate if they have been in contact with someone who tests positive for Covid-19.
