Heathrow Airport adds a £8.90 passenger fee to all departing flights

Travellers who fly from Heathrow Airport are being charged an extra fee of £8.90 in an attempt to recover pandemic losses.

The so-called 'Airport Cost Recovery Charge' has been added to ticket prices for departing flights to cover costs caused by the dramatic drop in passenger numbers over the past twelve months.

The London airport made losses totalling £2billion last year.

Other fee increases include a 55p check-in desk fee and a 77p rise in baggage handling fees, reports the Daily Mirror.

Passengers will not have to pay these charges at the airport as they have been absorbed into airline ticket prices.

A Heathrow Airport spokesperson said: "This charge has been introduced at the request of the airlines as an alternative way to recover costs related to airline [Other Regulated Charges] such as Baggage, PRS, FEGP and Common Use IT."

They added the charge could be adjusted at any point, or removed entirely by the end of the year

Heathrow says it makes "zero profit" from the extra tariffs.

It is currently illegal for people in England to holiday abroad, but under Boris Johnson's coronavirus lockdown exit strategy this will be reviewed in April.

International flights for leisure could resume on 17 May at the earliest — if the Government's tests for unlocking are met.
