Heather Watson crashes out of Wimbledon after straight sets defeat to Anett Kontaveit

Heather Watson's Wimbledon dream is over after a second round defeat to Anett Kontaveit.

The 27-year-old, playing in her 10th consecutive tournament at SW19, was regarded as an underdog in the clash with the talented Estonian.

And 20th seed Kontaveit, after a rocky start in the first set, recovered well showing her class to seal a 7-5, 6-1 victory on the No 1 Court.

Watson, who had beat American teenager Caty McNally in the first round, was feeling confident heading into the clash.

She showed that on court in the early stages as Kontaveit served up two double faults to hand the break to the Briton.

But Watson was also struggling to retain her serve and soon allowed Kontaveit back into the set at 6-5.

The British number two then suffered a huge blow after a closely contested first set, conceding her serve after a love break from Kontaveit.

After that, it was one-way traffic as the Estonian displayed her true ability with some stunning winners down the line.

Watson bowed out having lost the last five games of the match as she struggled for consistency and it means she will have to wait another year to improve on her best finish of reaching the third round in 2017.
