Heather Humphreys gives Government insight ahead of crunch Cabinet talks as she says 'we know everyone is worn out'

Heather Humphreys has said Ministers have got “big decisions” to make at Tuesday afternoon’s crunch Cabinet meeting.

The Minister for Social Protection was talking to reporters on her way into the round-table that will decide on what restrictions will be lifted next month.

She also said that the Government will do its best today for the public because they understand that people are “worn out” by Covid.

Ms Humphreys said: “Obviously we’ve big decisions to make now.

“Cabinet will be meeting shortly. We’ll have to hear the advice that NPHET are giving to us and we’ll know more in a few hours.”

She added: “I fully understand that there is anxiety out there, that people are worn out from Covid, but look it, we’ll have more clarity this evening.”

The Irish Mirror understands that among the announcements, Stephen Donnelly is expected to add more countries to the travel list which will require passengers to spend 12 days at mandatory hotel quarantine.

Countries such as France, Italy, Germany and the US are set to be added to the list.

The 5km travel limit is expected to lift next month, likely mid-April, as the focus remains on getting all school pupils back into classrooms on April 12 after the Easter break.

Cabinet Ministers are looking at extending the travel restriction to a county-wide limit.

Activities and sports for children is another priority for the government with outdoor sports such as tennis and golf to return later in April as well as some levels of GAA.

Construction work is also expected to return in mid-April for around 14,000 workers.

However, it will be on a phased basis with housing as the main priority.
