Heather Heyer: Mother of Charlottesville victim 'receiving death threats'

The mother of a 32-year-old woman killed at an anti-fascism rally in Virginia has said she has received death threats.

Susan Bro, whose daughter Heather Heyer died when a car ploughed into a group of demonstrators, has been vocal in her opposition to racism since her daughter's death.

"They tried to kill my child to shut her up," Ms Bro told a crowd gathered at her daughter's memorial service. "Well guess what? You just magnified her."

Ms Bro's life had been threatened since speaking out, she told NBC: "I’ve had death threats already ... because of what I’m doing right this second."

She blamed Donald Trump's campaign for increased activity of the far-right, saying he had "nurtured" a group of previously marginalised voices.

Mr Trump's slow response to the attack by a suspected white supremecist on Saturday has been fiercely criticised, after he condemned violence on "many sides".

"Whether there was violence on both sides or not is irrelevant," Ms Bro said. "The guy mowed my daughter down and, sorry, that’s not excusable."

Ms Bro said the White House had attempted to contact her several time since her daughter's death, but she had not returned the phone calls.
