Heather Chasen dead: EastEnders and Crossroads star dies aged 92 as ex Amanda Barrie pays tribute

Former EastEnders star Heather Chasen has died aged 92.

The sad news was confirmed by her longtime friend and ex Amanda Barrie, who paid tribute to the "gloriously funny" actress.

In a post on Twitter, Amanda wrote: "Remembering the fabulous Heather Chasen who sadly left us yesterday.

"She was wonderfully eccentric, gloriously funny, and a very special actress.

"There’ll never be another like her. Will always miss her."

Coronation Street star Amanda reportedly dated Heather before marrying wife Hilary Bonner.

Heather is best to known to soap fans for playing Janine Butcher's grandmother Lydia Simmonds in EastEnders.

She starred in the soap for two months until her character's onscreen death in 2011.

As well as her role in the BBC show, she's also remembered for starring in another soap - Crossroads.

After appearing in a minor role as a reporter in 1982, bosses of the ITV series invited her back later that year to play Valerie Pollard.

She stayed with the show for four years with her stint running from 1982 until 1986.

Heather previously said of Crossroads: "I did an episode where I played this journalist which they must have quite liked because they got back to me about a month later.

"[They asked me] 'Would you come back and join the cast and change the colour of your hair?'

"Well, I said okay and so I changed my [hair] colour from red to blonde and I looked exactly the same! I didn't look any different at all.

"And so then I came back as this naughty lady, Valerie Pollard."
