Shipments of Kosui pears are at their peak.
In the leading production area of Shiroi, Chiba Prefecture, Kosui is an important variety. At a fruit sorting center, farmers wearing face masks as a measure against the new coronavirus picked pears one by one, sorted them by weight, shape and color, and packed them into boxes.
This year's Kosui pears are slightly small due to the long rainy season and lack of sunlight, but their sweetness is increasing due to the recent heat wave.
"I'll be glad if everyone eats fresh pears and lifts their spirits amid these days of self-restraint," said farmer Shigeki Muto, 63.
Other varieties such as Hosui and Niitaka will be harvested in the days to come, with shipments continuing through September.
