Heat warnings upgraded to amber with UK temperatures set to hit 33C

  • Heat health alerts have been issued across parts of the UK , with amber warnings for London, the South East, East, and Midlands, and yellow alerts for the rest of England , starting from Friday and lasting until 5pm on 27 May.
  • Temperatures are forecast to reach up to 30C in London, potentially exceeding 33C in southern England on Sunday, which could surpass the current May record of 32.8C set in 1922.
  • The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued these warnings, indicating a likely significant impact on health and social services, including a potential rise in deaths and increased demand on care provisions.
  • The alerts also highlight possible issues with managing medicines and the heat affecting the ability of the workforce to deliver services, alongside potential travel delays due to the high temperatures.
  • This period of high pressure is expected to bring warm weather across the UK, with temperatures reaching up to 28C in other regions, continuing throughout the bank holiday weekend.
