Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters will officially begin the process of recovering of an ankle injury that has sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
The Heat confirmed Waiters was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday afternoon. Coach Erik Spoelstra declined to comment after the morning shootaround and before their game against the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center because the procedure had yet to be completed.
The Heat were also without guards Tyler Johnson (ankle) and Goran Dragic (knee) because of injuries. It was the second straight missed game for Dragic and fourth consecutive for Johnson.
Last week, the Heat announced Waiters elected to have surgery to correct the recurring issue. He has been out of the lineup since Dec. 22 and missed the last 13 games of last season with the same injury.
Waiters hinted he was nearing the surgery date Sunday night while watching the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game and advance to play the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. Waiters, who is from Philadelphia, shared this on his Instagram page.
"I get surgery tomorrow," Waiters wrote, referring to Monday. "This game help calm my nerves. BigTime!!!!"
