Heartwarming 'wall of kindness' offers free coats and hats to those struggling in cold

As temperatures plummet across the UK, the fact is that many people will be struggling to stay warm. As the cost of living soars, many people will be unsure whether they can afford to put their heating on, and sadly, some will not be able to purchase a coat for themselves to stay warm either.

That's why in London, people are being encouraged to leave coats and hats if they don't need them anymore, or to take them if they're in need. The 'wall of kindness', made by The De Group company, has been placed on a street in the capital so people can complete random acts of kindness, or receive them if they want some warmth this winter.

On the left-hand side, coats are hung up on pegs, and the instructions above read: "Take a coat if you're cold. Leave a coat if you don't use it anymore."

On the right-hand side it says: "Take a hat if you need one. Leave a hat if you don't need it anymore."

One woman spotted the heartwarming gesture and snapped a photo of it, before tweeting: "Isn't this beautiful?"

Other Twitter users thought the idea was lovely, but commented that they'd rather live in a society where this wasn't necessary, and wished that everyone could be warm during the colder months.

One wrote: "It is indeed beautiful that this had been put up. I can't help reflecting (however idealistic and naive it might be) that it would be better to live in a society where this wasn't necessary because people weren't left wanting in the first place."

"Brilliant idea!", someone else commented, with a thumbs-up emoji, another added: "What a lovely idea."

Others said that they'd seen similar in their local areas, and someone even wrote that their local library had a scheme the same.

Someone tweeted: "Local to me a group organises this each winter and they peg or hang coats, hats, scarves, and gloves to a park fence made of wire. Same message. Take what you need. Leave what you don't."
