Heartwarming video captures tram driver singing Sweet Caroline on Metrolink

The spirit of England winning the Women's Euros has been infectious - and it has even made its way onto Manchester's Metrolink.

Video footage taken by 9 year-old Nate Ellaby, from Sale, last night captures the moment a tram driver burst into the adopted English football anthem Sweet Caroline at Pomona tram stop.

The tram driver can be hard saying "Well done to the ladies, winning the European Women's Cup, well done to them, congratulations," before bursting into the Neil Diamond classic.

Dad James, 41, told the Manchester Evening News that Nate, who is autistic, loves filming videos of journeys on the Metrolink - so much so that he’s been invited to visit their depots next week! They frequently make journeys together on the city's tram system system, which Nate is "really into".

The pair were travelling between Cornbrook and the Trafford Centre when the driver came on the intercom to update passengers about a temporary signal issue.

Once the tram started moving again, and James said the driver started talking about football and then the Women's Euros, and then he burst into song - to a mixed reaction.

"There were quite a few people who were enjoying it, but there were a few youths who were shouting back at him a bit," he admitted.

But the moment delighted Nate, who had never done the Cornbrook to Trafford Centre route before - and James said he thought it was "really nice".

In a big week for football, England women's football team won the Women's Euros last Sunday with a stunning 2-1 victory over Germany at Wembley, and the new Premier League season starts tonight.
