This is the heartwarming moment a Morrisons security guard held an umbrella over a dog to protect him from the rain.

The picture, taken by Mel Gracie at the store in Giffnock in Glasgow, has been shared thousands of times.

Sharing the photo on Twitter, the 25-year-old said: "Shout out to this Morrisons security man keeping this good boy dry. He said ‘well you never know how dogs feel about the rain’."

Ethan Dearman, who later identified himself on Twitter as the security guard in the photograph, said: "Looks like I made a lot of people happy today."

Social media users were quick to praise the kindness of Mr Dearman.

One user said: "This guy has single handedly created more brand value through one innocent act of kindness for another living being than any amount of money ever would have.

"Actually pretty amazing when you start to think about it, a very deep lesson to be learned."

Another said: "Don’t know him but you just know he’s a nice man."

A third wrote: "That is amazing. The fella was like 'I don’t mind the rain.. but the dog might not fancy it'."

A fourth said: "This is my local supermarket. Such a lovely person to do this. Well done to this guy for showing that there is still people in the world that notice others including animals and do little things like this to show empathy for other souls.

"My daughter thinks he is a hero. Legend!"

And Morrisons even replied to Mel's tweet and wrote: "Adorable!"

Others called for Morrisons to give the security guard a pay rise.

"Just beautiful...this man deserves a pay rise," one Twitter user said.

The girlfriend of owner of the dog even replied to the thread.

She said: "He was shocked to realise this has gone viral and recognised him right away!

"More than happy for Jem to get a bit of attention, though - he is a indeed, a very good boy."

A Morrisons spokeswoman said: "It’s going to be a wet week so we’ve issued nine thousand Morrisons umbrellas to keep our customers – and their dogs – dry.

"It’s good to see that it is already happening in our Giffnock store."
