Heartwarming moment hearing aid allows 11-week-old baby to listen to mum's voice for first time

A mum has shared the heartwarming moment her 11-week-old baby boy heard her voice for the first time.

Tiffany Wroe filmed her three-month-old son Saul after his new hearing aids were fitted and the tiny tot is overwhelmed with emotion as he hears his parents speaking to him.

In the video Saul, who was born with bilateral moderate-severe hearing loss, can be seen smiling up at his mum, before becoming overwhelmed and holding back tears as she lovingly speaks to him.

Tiffany and husband John can be heard gently talking to their tiny son and eventually he makes noises in response.

The couple, who also have two daughters, Khaleesi, five and four-year-old Kendall, said the moment Saul finally got his hearing aids last week was "very, very emotional".

Speaking to the Record, Tiffany said: "It's was very, very emotional and such a special time.

"When Saul was born he failed his newborn hearing screening so he went for a follow-up and he failed that too. Then he went for a third hearing test and failed that too.

"Doctors told us he had profound hearing loss but we weren't sure because we knew he had been more responsive that he would have been if he was profoundly deaf so we did a bit of research ourselves."

The couple who hail from Oldham and Rochdale, but have lived in Kenya for 10 years, contacted specialists at Manchester University who advised them on tests they could try with Saul to see how he reacted and allow them to get a more accurate measure of his level of hearing.

Tiffany said: "In the end they said he could hear from about 60 decibels. People with full hearing can hear at about 20. If you speak at normal level Saul can't hear, but if you were to really should he would be able to hear something."

Medics told the couple that their youngest child would need the help of hearing aids but the couple, who are both swimming teachers in Kenya, are both currently unable to work because of Covid-19 restrictions, so family stepped in to help get little Saul his hearing aids.

Tiffany said: "Thanks to John's parents' help Saul was able to get the best hearing aids available and we are so grateful. Just watching his face when he heard us speaking for the first time was so incredible."

The couple need to take Saul for regular hearing tests and he needs to have his hearing aids refitted as he grows.

Tiffany added: "We don't know if his hearing will ever get better, but they have said it shouldn't get any worse, which is a relief.

"His big sisters think that’s Saul's hearing aids are his super powers so that he can hear them talk. He certainly is our little superstar."
