Heartwarming moment Covid survivor applauded by NHS staff as he leaves Edinburgh Royal Infirmary

A heartwarming video has emerged of amazing NHS staff applauding a coronavirus survivor as he leaves Edinburgh Royal Infirmary having beaten the illness.

The jubilant 46-second video shows medics form a guard of honour to greet the now-recovered patient as he leaves ward 105 at the hospital to meet his family. As he walks by them he can be seen pumping his fist and high-fiving staff.

For weeks people have been showing their appreciation to health care staff for the work they are doing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

And moments like this hammer home just how important they are, not just in providing expert medical care, but keeping spirits high as some people go through what will be among the toughest times of their life.

The fantastic video was shared on the dedicated Twitter account for the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh's General and Vascular Surgical (GaVS) team.

They posted: "This is the first patient being discharged from ward 105 RIE after surviving Covid-19. A very overwhelming feeling for everyone."

Edinburgh Live reported on Friday how student nurses from the University of Edinburgh have headed back to the coronavirus frontline, returning to clinical placements to support the NHS response to the pandemic.

A total of 27 final-year students and 40 second and third year students will soon begin supporting NHS and care home colleagues.
