Heartwarming gesture by homeware store to help those in need while restrictions are in place

High street retailer Dunelm has been praised by shoppers after they discovered ‘hidden messages’ hung from its in-store Christmas trees.

The homeware store has placed gift tags on its festive trees in shops, which shoppers can take away to give to some of the UK’s most vulnerable and lonely people.

Each tag has the name of someone currently in a nursing or care home along with details about what they would like as a gift this Christmas. Shoppers can take a tag, buy the gift and drop them both back into stores for Dunelm to give them out.

One woman shared pictures on the initiative on Facebook, explaining how it works, reports the MEN .

She said: "How cute is this. Take a tag off the tree in Dunelm for a little dear in a nursing home, with their name and what they would like as a gift for Christmas , write a message out for them and drop back off before 11th December, sharing this because there is so many on the tree, the thought of any of them not getting a gift pulls at me, plus there is children's names that are being added next week, love this idea and knowing some of them might not have family but they will hopefully all get a box filled with presents and have a smile on their face.

The messages invite customers to 'deliver joy' this Christmas (Croydon Advertiser)

"I've had hundreds of messages from people all over the country asking about this, amazed from the amount of shares and people wanting to gift.

"I don't work there but I know all stores are taking part in this campaign."

The Facebook post has since been shared more than 16,000 times already, with more than 1,500 likes.

Commenting beneath the post, one person said: "This is a lovely idea."

Another added: "Omg love this, going to call in just for this”.

A third wrote: "How cute is this!! Deffo gunna pop down."

Abbie Higham, community champion for Dunelm, said: "We’re asking our community group to come into store and donate gifts for the person they’ve chosen on the label and the idea is just to support our local community.

"It’s going to be a hard Christmas for people if they’re struggling so we want to make sure they’re going to get a gift this year, at least something.”

"We’d like to reach as many people as possible."
