Hearts vs Hibs clash sees COCONUT chucked on to the pitch

A new form of missile was witnessed by fans in Edinburgh today after a coconut was launched at Tynecastle.

Flares were also chucked on to the Gorgie pitch on at least three occasions during the fiercely-contested clash.

Kick-off was delayed for a couple of minutes as referee Willie Collum dealt with a smoke bomb that lay smouldering trackside.

Another was chucked on to the pitch by Hearts fans minutes into the game. Then, after Daryl Horgan had cancelled out Peter Haring’s opener the first half for Hibs, a third pyrotechnic landed on the surface.

Then came the missile straight out of the funfair. As Horgan was celebrating, a coconut was also thrown on to the surface by a fan. We're thinking it must have come from a shy.

Here’s how fans reacted to the incident as only Scottish football fans can...

@Gers89_ said: Was that a coconut thrown onto the pitch in celebration or was it Steven Whittaker ripping off his toupee?

@PaulDeehan added: "Ok I thought I’d seen about everything that could be thrown in a football pitch but a coconut in the Hibs v Hearts Derby"

@BenTheTim said: "I left the house for 5 minutes and when I came back both Hearts and Hibs had scored, and someone has thrown a coconut on the pitch."

@CanaryScots said: "Coconut thrown on the pitch at Tynie, nothing can beat Scottish football"

@Kieran_Celtic added: "“Keys, phone, coconut, wallet, ticket.” Perfectly normal."
