Hearts skipper Christophe Berra is Europe's top defender in one key area

Hearts skipper Christophe Berra wins more header than any other defender in Europe.

The centre-back is outperforming some of Europe's elite stars in a key defensive area, according to new statistics.

According to the CIES Football Observatory , Berra has won 233 of 268 aerial duels contested this season, a seriously impressive 86.9 per cent.

The 34-year-old tops a list of 26 European leagues outside the so-called "big five" but also outperforms any defender in the elite divisions, including the likes of Virgil Van Dijk and Raphael Varane.

Celtic 's Kristoffer Ajer also makes the top 10 - he's won 121 of 142 aerial duels (85.2 per cent).

His Hoops team-mate Filip Benkovic also scores highly (84.4 per cent) while Hibs captain Darren McGregor (82.8 per cent) and Aberdeen star Mikey Devlin (82.6 per cent) are among the top performers as well.

Rangers duo Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson score 82 per cent and 80 per cent, respectively.

In fact, 12 of the top 50 from the "other 26 leagues" category are players from the Scottish Premiership.

Darren O'Dea (80.8 per cent), Scott McKenna (79.8 per cent), Peter Hartley (79.6 per cent) and Paul Hanlon (79.3 per cent) also feature.
