Hearts send John Robertson emotional message of support after Caley boss goes on compassionate leave

Hearts have delivered an emotional message of support to Tynecastle icon John Robertson after he temporarily stood down from his managerial role at Inverness Caledonian Thistle on compassionate grounds.

The Jambos are due to face Championship rivals Caley on Friday evening in a game played in front of a ‘record’ virtual crowd as part of a ticket scheme between the Highland side and their Capital counterparts.

But the Gorgie club’s record league goalscorer will not be in the opposing dugout to Hearts boss Robbie Neilson as he spends time away from the game following a family bereavement.

Another former Hearts star, Neil McCann, has taken over as interim manager with assistant boss Scott Kellchaer having taken time off a while ago to recuperate from a serious illness.

The Jambos have wished Robertson and his family well as they offered a helping hand should it be required.

A statement posted online read: "Everyone at Heart of Midlothian Football Club sends their heartfelt wishes to John Robertson at this difficult time.

"Our thoughts are very much with John and his family. The Club has been in touch with Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC to pass on our best wishes to John and to offer our support."

The Highland side drew 2-2 with Alloa on Tuesday night under the guidance of coaches Barry Wilson and Ryan Esson.

Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland on Tuesday, Caley chief executive Scott Gardiner said Robertson had been "overwhelmed" by the support from all quarters of the game.

He added: “I spoke to John’s wife this morning and spoke to John this afternoon and he’s completely aware of it and very thankful.

"It shows when it really matters everyone can behave appropriately and they’ve gone above and beyond, everyone who has contacted us and it's much appreciated.

“The right thing is the right thing, no matter what and the various boards of Inverness over the years have had a reputation for doing the right thing and it’s no different now."
