Hearts predicted line up v Alloa as injured trio set to return alongside Mackay-Steven debut

Robbie Neilson could welcome three players back to Hearts' starting XI for the trip to Alloa Athletic - and may hand a debut to new recruit Gary Mackay-Steven.

The Tynecastle side have had an extended January hiatus after their previous two games fell victim to postponements amid the harsh winter weather and have not played since the 3-1 defeat to Dundee at Dens Park on January 2.

Olly Lee departed Gorgie on Friday to rejoin Gillingham on loan until the end of the season - when his contract is due to expire.

However, Neilson will be able to field former Aberdeen, Celtic and Dundee United winger Mackay-Steven after the Scotland international joined from New York City on a free transfer.

Liam Boyce could return from injury in attack, while Josh Ginnelly and Michael Smith, who agreed to extend his deal to the summer of 2022 during the week, are both available for selection after previously returning positive tests for COVID-19.

Hearts were stunned on their previous visit to the Indodrill Stadium as The Wasps sprung a Betfred Cup shock to dump them out of the competition - days after easing past Peter Grant's men 3-0 at Tynecastle in league action.

But Neilson's side are likely to be out to gain a measure of revenge after being embarrassed on their last visit.

Predicted line up

Boyce's return should see the Northern Irish international lead the line over Craig Wighton, but the arrival of Mackay-Steven could mean he slots straight in to feed the forward opposite Josh Ginnelly on the left flank.

Andy Iriving could be given a free role to pull the strings from midfield, while Andy Halliday should add some bite to rival The Wasps' more combative central players.

Smith should slot straight back in to what is looking like an increasingly settled back line alongside Halkett, Berra and Kingsley.

Line up in full: Gordon, Kingsley, Berra, Halkett, Smith, Irving, Halliday, Ginnelly, Naismith, Mackay-Steven, Boyce
