Hearts player ratings as two players can't be split after derby stalemate

By Ross Pilcher

Hearts and Hibs shared the spoils at Tynecastle after a goalless derby draw in the first meeting of the season between the Edinburgh rivals.

Both goalkeepers were outstanding while it was classy Jambos midfielder Beni Baningime who picked up the man of the match award from Sky Sports.

Craig Gordon received plenty of plaudits for his role however with even opposing keeper Matt Macey admitting his performance was outstanding.

The Hearts back five was robust again with John Souttar, Craig Halkett and the returning Stephen Kingsley forming a functional trio in the middle.

And further up the park, Ben Woodburn showed signs that he is growing into the No.9 shirt.

Here, Record Sport rates the Hearts players as they missed the chance to go top of the league, where Rangers remain.

Hearts

Craig Gordon Several top saves, one in particular from Kyle Magennis that looked in all the way until Gordon did what he usually does - 8

John Souttar Got away with one slack pass in a dangerous area but defended well throughout and was strong in the air - 7

Craig Halkett Similar to Souttar and brought the ball out just as well as his defensive colleague at times - 7

Stephen Kingsley Got forward from that left centre back position to support Cochrane all game. Strong display after recovering from Covid - 7

Michael Smith A bit tentative going forward at times and crossing could have been better but wasn’t fully fit - 6

Beni Baningime Excellent in midfield. Won the ball well, used it well and looked to drive forward whenever possible - 8

Peter Haring Mopped up alongside Baningime and was an important physical presence for Hearts in midfield with some important tackles - 7

Alex Cochrane One excellent late cross that was almost turned into his own net by Hanlon. Good understanding with Kingsley - 7

Ben Woodburn Bright and inventive, looked to make things happen and linked well with Boyce but tired as the second half wore on - 7

Gary Mackay-Steven

(PA)

Had a personal battle with Macey, forcing three good saves from the Hibs ‘keeper although should have scored with one - 7

Liam Boyce Didn’t get many sights at goal but was a good focal point for Hearts. Linked well with Woodburn - 6

Substitutes

Josh Ginnelly Was unlucky with a header at the back post but was generally well marshalled by Josh Doig on the right - 5

Taylor Moore Replaced Michael Smith but was on to defend rather than attack Hibs down the right hand side - 4

Barrie McKay Some nice touches from the former Rangers man on his debut but needs time to get up to speed and match fit - 4
