Hearts player ratings as Liam Boyce makes the difference in poor conditions at Ayr

It was by no means vintage, but Hearts were in relative control as they saw out a 1-0 win over Ayr United.

The victory moves them 12 points clear at the top of the Championship as Robbie Neilson's team took another step towards the title.

Liam Boyce was the match winner and played well on a night where the conditions didn't help either team.

Here's how the Jambos rated out of ten.

Craig Gordon: One poor pass form the back and one dodgy kick-out but wasn't tested at all. 6

Michael Smith: Solid enough but not at his best going forward. 6

Craig Halkett: Defender well, dominant in the air and snuffed out Ayr's front men. 7

Mihai Popescu: Same as Halkett, although came a cropper a couple of times in possession. 6

Stephen Kingsley: Another who was fine defensively but not as prominent at the other end. 4-4-2 probably limits both full backs in that sense. 6

Andy Halliday: The type of game he was signed for. Scrapped away in the middle of the park and cross led to the penalty. 7

Andy Irving: Not quite at the same levels of previous weeks but some good deliveries and did the ugly stuff. 6

Jamie Walker: Switched sides and showed some good touches but not the difference maker he was last week. 7

Gary Mackay-Steven: Lively enough in the first half but faded after half-time. Still needs games to get properly up to speed. 6

Liam Boyce: Best player on the pitch. Linked well, movement was good and looked to create in the final third. Good penalty. 8

Armand Gnanduillet: Still doesn't have that understanding with Boyce and was given little service to work with. 6

Subs:

Aaron McEneff: Looked bright and full of enefry when he came on. 5

Gervane Kasterneer: Hit the byline and forced a corner and could have done better with a late chance. 4

Steven Naismith: Little time to do much but kept Hearts ticking over. 3
