Hearts' penalties were 'soft', says Motherwell star Nathan McGinley

Nathan McGinley reckons Motherwell were the victims of poor decisions against Hearts at Tynecastle on Saturday, but says the 2-0 defeat needs to be taken into context.

Liam Boyce's fifth-minute penalty was added to by a spectacular free kick from Stephen Kingsley after 22 minutes, keeping the three points in Edinburgh.

English left-back McGinley, 25, felt Boyle's penalty and one that was awarded to Callum Devlin in the second half - which Liam Kelly saved - were soft.

But he points out that Motherwell had their chances, with Craig Gordon making superb stops from Tony Watt, Kaiyne Woolery and Juhani Ojala and says they move on to a Fir Park showdown with Celtic in a fortnight.

He said: "Hearts hit us hard and fast. It was the early goal - I'm not sure if it was a penalty or not, both of them, to be fair.

"I don't think so myself, so it was frustrating to concede really early on, but that's football.

"We've had a few good results, and today was obviously frustrating.

"It was a disappointing result, but I thought we had spells in the game where we looked good.

"Hearts are a good side, they're up at the top of the table, and I thought we did well at times."

McGinley says Motherwell won't go into their clash with Celtic over-awed by the occasion or their illustrious opponents.

Kelly saved a second Boyce penalty in the second half following a disputed 'foul' on Cammy Devlin (SNS Group)

He said: "We go into every game with the same mind-set. We've been on a good run, we've just got to take today as it is and we move on.

"It's still early days, really, we're not getting ahead of ourselves. We've started really well, and the gaffer is happy with us, so we just keep going."
