Hearts open to Murrayfield return as Jambos go all-out to bring fans back

Hearts say they are up for a return to Murrayfield in order to get fans back through the turnstiles.

Scottish Rugby have offered the Jambos and city rivals Hibs use of the 67,000 seater stadium when football restarts as part of a plan to make the ground “bio bubble”.

They believe both football and rugby could be restarted safely with both sports making use of the stadium.

The extra space inside the home of Scottish rugby would allow for social distancing between fans to a greater extent than Tynecastle or Easter Road.

As things stand, Scottish football will have to restart behind closed doors due to coronavirus guidelines laid out by the Scottish Government.

Hearts could be waiting until October to get going again if their reconstruction proposal falls flat and they have to compete in the Championship next season, with most clubs outwith the top flight more comfortable with a later start date.

In contrast, Hibs are gearing up for a 1 August kick-off after the Premiership got the okay to return to training later this month.

But if they are able to get their fans in to watch them, Ann Budge ’s club are considering making the short one mile hop to a venue they’re already familiar with.

A club source said: “Following discussions with Scottish Rugby, the club is open to the idea of utilising BT Murrayfield as a hub if it proves to be a way to safely introduce larger crowds back to football.”

Hearts last played at Murrayfield back in 2018 when they faced Celitc in the Betfred Cup semi-final.

Prior to that, they staged league matches there while the new main stand at Tynecastle was being constructed, and have hosted big Euro ties there against the likes of Schalke, Braga and Sparta Prague.
