Hearts must take legal route alone as Iain Dougan insists Stranraer focus is on League Two title

Iain Dougan says Stranraer will leave the court action to Hearts as his own club target rectifying the wrongs of their relegation on the park.

The Blues are facing up to life in the bottom tier after being demoted despite having nine games left to play.

Hearts have already got the ball rolling on legal action after the latest reconstruction talks failed to save them from the drop along with Partick Thistle and Stranraer.

And while Stair Park chairman Dougan has backed the Jambos’ move, acknowledging his club could yet benefit from it in a financial sense, he says Stranraer will now focus their attention on winning League Two.

“We are disappointed but far from surprised,” he said. “Too many clubs are wary of reconstruction especially when we have no firm date for when we can start with crowds.

“If this had been under normal circumstances then it wouldn’t even have got to a vote at Championship level.

“Once the Premiership kiboshed it then it didn’t need to go to a vote further down.

“If they don’t want to expand the top flight to 14 then they’re not going to want to expand it to 16 so I don’t think there’ll be much appetite for reconstruction for a long, long time.

“If they’re not going to do it for a club the size of Hearts then they’re not going to do it for one of the smaller clubs.

“But I don’t feel let down, no. It’s a case of being realistic for us.

“The aim now has to be to win League Two and get straight back to where we should have been.

“Stranraer certainly don’t have the finances to pursue a legal avenue.

“It’s not a case of flinging in the towel. A court case may be successful but I don’t think it would reinstate us in League One which was our ultimate goal.

“We felt aggrieved at dropping out of a league with so much of the season still to go.

“But if Hearts take that route and are successful then you’d think ourselves and Partick Thistle might be awarded something too.

“So it may well be that Stranraer and Partick Thistle don’t have to go to court.

“Hearts are a big club with financial clout and if they feel they have a good case then who are we to tell them not to do it?”

Dougan is desperate to get a start date for the lower two divisions with the Championship now getting the green light to begin in mid-October.

He claimed league games without crowds would be “financial suicide”.

But he added: “If we could have the Betfred Cup starting in October - even at hub grounds without crowds - then the financial backing that tournament gets would still give you receipts.

“That would only work though if it could run directly into a league programme with crowds at your own ground.

“You’d be talking November by then. Hopefully if things keep improving then that might be achievable.”
