Hearts keeper Craig Gordon should have been sent off, rages Motherwell boss

Motherwell boss Stevie Hammell insists Hearts keeper Craig Gordon should have been sent off for his challenge on Louis Moult that led to his side being handed a penalty lifeline in their 3-2 defeat.

Hearts were 2-0 up at Tynecastle, thanks to Andy Halliday's double either side of the interval, and despite Jorge Grant's straight red card for a crude challenge on Calum Slattery 38 minute into the game.

Gordon, who was already on a booking for protesting Grant's red card, wiped substitute Louis Moult out, who then picked himself up and scored the penalty, with Blair Spittal levelling for Motherwell, only for Lawrence Shankland to net a penalty winner for the Jambos.

Hammell said: "It was an eventful game, a game we put a lot into.

"Even though we lost, I shouldn't be sitting here speaking about a loss, in my opinion we had enough of the game, and at the very least we should be sitting here with a point.

Hammell says his side had a few decisions go against them in their 3-2 defeat against Hearts (SNS Group)

"I'm stunned that Hearts didn't go down to nine men. I don't want to sit here and make it sound like I'm making excuses, but I think when you bring someone down when they're going through on goal it's a clear foul and an easy yellow card.

"I don't want to make excuses, we should have been better today, in terms of the outcome of the match.

"But I think that's clear for anyone to see that it's a yellow card which would have been the second red in the game.

"I think a couple of decisions went against us today.

"Everything that could have gone wrong did."

Hammell also had an issue with Hearts' last-gasp penalty not going to VAR.

"They say everything gets checked," he said. "It's difficult because we feel we need clarity with some of the things. Louis Moult hit a shot that was blocked by a hand, and we were told last week that any shot going towards the goal that gets blocked with an arm is a penalty.

"We feel that's something that went against us also, and there's a little bit of confusion."
