Hearts' Glenn Whelan makes final Republic of Ireland squad despite hamstring injury

Glenn Whelan has been included in the revised Republic of Ireland squad for their upcoming games.

Mick McCarthy’s team face New Zealand in a friendly before their crucial Euro 2020 qualifier against Denmark in Dublin.

A win against the Danes will ensure Ireland qualify automatically for the finals next summer.

Whelan had been included in the original squad, although his participation was in doubt after being subbed after less than half-an-hour of Sunday’s Betfred Cup semi-final against Rangers.

The midfielder trained with Hearts in St Andrews this week though, and has made the cut for McCarthy’s trimmed down squad.

Michael Smith is also due to report for international duty with Northern Ireland after Saturday’s match against St Mirren at Tynecastle.

The defender has been included in the pool to take on The Netherlands and Germany, although he too had to be taken off at Hamoden last weekend and hasn’t yet trained ahead of Hearts’ game this weekend.
