Hearts fans give Craig Levein verdict as former boss leaves Tynecastle

Few figures connected with Hearts in recent years have generated as much debate as Craig Levein.

Despite becoming something of a cult figure in Scottish football due to his willingness to engage in disputes with other managers and frequently sarcastic demeanour in press conferences, his failure to deliver results on the pitch eventually cost him.

Having been sacked from his role as first team manager at the end of October, he remained at the club as Director of Football until this week.

With his departure from Tynecastle finally confirmed, I asked Hearts fans to sum up their thoughts on Levein's tenure in a sentence.

It's clear from the small sample below that, for all the goodwill Levein had built up, there is lingering disappointment in the performances he delivered.

"Club legend, helped right the ship, but sadly tarnished by hanging on for too long" - @JamboDes

"Club legend, helped right the ship then ran it aground whilst smashing the bridge making it harder for the next captain!" - @MidlandScotsman

"Stubborn and unwilling to discuss just how wrong he could be" - @ToxicDeath

"Cavalier with his mouth, negative on the pitch" - @marsh_ross

"Let his confidence in his ability to get us out of it blind him from what was happening" - @barryodonnell86

"Buckled by injuries and tactics" - @EdinburghSon

"Should have stayed in the boardroom when Neilson left" - @GraemeC2304

"Undid all the good work he'd achieved behind the scenes by not recognising is own managerial failings, even though he had spotted them in Cathro" - @knowledgeisall

"Good guy, shame it went the way it did" - @SlaveringPleb

"Still a club legend to most fans over 30 but time was up" - @Office_Greg

"Really wanted it to work out for him/us but obviously it didn't. He hasn't been the same since his health scare and should probably have walked away then, definitely after the cup final anyway. Feel sorry for him but at the same time, can't understand why he hung around so long" - @NickyCarr51

"A wonderful player for Hearts and but for injury would have gone to the very top. Great first spell as manager. Sadly his spell as Director of Football and manager second time around was abysmal. Has to take blame for shocking last few years but no hate from me" - @JamboMalc

"Hopefully will receive a more positive retrospective look back at his second spell if academy changes produce results" - @Amoruso1998

"Tremendous player, went badly wrong quickly after his illness and the various injuries we had, wish him well" - @Cormachio

"You either leave Hearts a hero, or stay long enough to see yourself become the villain" - @MrParashoot

"He’s leaving in difficult circumstances, but I haven’t forgotten all the good things and all the important work he did for our club" - @serialsockthief
