Hearts fan in hospital after being brutally attacked by gang following Motherwell match

A Hearts fan was hospitalised after being brutally attacked by a gang of thugs following Friday night's match with Motherwell.

Darren Manson (22) was walking to Motherwell train station with his mum at around 10pm when he was subjected to an assault which left "blood pouring from his mouth for more than four hours".

He suffered a broken jaw during the incident, which happened on Windmillhill street in the Lanarkshire town, and underwent surgery on Saturday to have plates and screws fitted.

His mum Nicky (45) told the Daily Record that they were on their way to catch a train to Falkirk after watching their team win 2-1.

She said that things began when the group started shouting abuse at them.

She added: "All I said was to shut up silly wee boys, but they just started attacking us and mostly going for my son.

"They ended up in front of us and another older guy came from nowhere behind my son and punched him so hard I heard it – and then he just walked off.

"My son was on the ground and they all left – he had blood pouring from his mouth."

Darren ended up being taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where it was confirmed he had a broken jaw, and needed an operation.

Nicky said that her son faces a long road to recovery and may need to take time off work, adding: " I don't know if they were from the game or if they were just looking for trouble.

"These people need to be caught before it happens to some other innocent person."

The Record reports that Motherwell FC chief executive Alan Burrows has reached out to offer his best wishes, and invited them along to hospitality at the next Motherwell v Hearts game.

Police Scotland confirmed enquiries are ongoing into the incident.
