Hearts duo to miss East Fife Betfred Cup clash after Northern Ireland Euro 2020 play-off call-ups

Hearts will be without Michael Smith and Liam Boyce for their Betfred Cup match against East Fife after both were called up for Northern Ireland.

The Tynecastle duo have been selected in Ian Baraclough’s 26-man squad for their crunch Euro 2020 play-off final against Slovakia in Belfast next week.

They then face Austria and Romania in their subsequent Nations League fixtures.

Craig Gordon will also miss out after being recalled to the Scotland squad their their match with Serbia.

Northern Ireland have Boyce to thank for getting them to this stage, the striker staying cool to net the winning penalty in their semi-final shoot-out victory over Bosnia.

The Hearts hitman had ice in the veins against last weekend as he fired his team into a second successive Scottish Cup final at Hampden, beating Ofir Marciano from 12 yards to give the Jambos a sweet 2-1 extra-time win over city rivals Hibs.

Robbie Neilson does have cover to cope with Boyce and Smith’s absence for the trip to Methil next Tuesday, however.

Jamie Brandon will come in at right back, while in form Craig Wighton will likely take up the central striking role, or partner captain Steven Naismith in attack.

A win would see the Jambos safely through to the knock-out rounds as Group A winners.
