Hearts derby hero Sean Clare gives verdict on Marc McNulty's 'stamp' as he rejoices in famous win

Sean Clare said the pictures would speak for themselves when asked if Marc McNulty should have been sent off during Hearts' 3-1 derby win.

The Scotland striker was shown to have brought his studs down on Clare’s back as he was lying on the deck out by the touchline.

The Hibs forward went unpunished by referee Kevin Clancy at the time, but could be hearing from the Scottish FA’s compliance officer in the coming days if the footage is reviewed.

And as far as Clare is concerned, the video evidence will do the talking.

He said: “There were enough cameras there to answer those questions.

“I haven’t seen it back but I felt like it was a stamp at the time and I’ll let people make their minds up.

“I said to the ref I thought it was a stamp, I was on the floor so couldn’t see it. I haven’t seen it myself but I have been told it’s not great.

“But I'm not bothered about it now, winning the game was the main thing.

“If people see it they see it, it’s not for me to decide whatever it is. In the end, it was irrelevant to the result.”

The Jambos number eight set his side on their way to their biggest win on their rivals patch since 2012 with an ice cool second half penalty, and admitted it was one of the biggest he’s taken over the course of his career - especially given the way Hearts play.

“It was maybe the most high pressure one I’ve taken,” he said. “But I just try and block things like that out when I’m taking them.

“The more pressure you let in the less cleanly you’ll strike it. I was happy it went in at the end of the day.

“I practiced my penalties even when I wasn’t on them and thankfully I’m putting them away at the moment.

“Hopefully I can continue doing that.”

Clare said it was a bit premature to suggest Hearts had turned a corner, but back-to-back wins for the first time under Daniel Stendel, and in tough fixtures, is evidence that they could finally be on the right track.

He added: “That’s two very good performances back to back and that’s what we need to do.

“We were outstanding defensively and that’s the platform for us to move forward.

“With the quality of players we have we will always score, so we have to be like that defensively and we’ll win games.

“We have hopefully taken a lot of confidence from the last two, Rangers are a good team and Hibs have turned their season around.

“We have shown we can do it as well, we have to keep it up and we will be alright.

“It’s too early to say we have turned the corner because it’s only two games and one in the league.

“Let’s hope it’s a turning point but we have to make it one.”
