Stephen Kingsley is convinced Hearts just need one chance for the goals to start flowing again - and is determined Friday’s visit to Inverness Caledonian Thistle can kick off the run that will see them reclaim their Premiership status.
The full back was left frustrated as 26 attempts on goal came and went in the 1-1 draw with Greenock Morton last weekend as Jamie Walker’s 50th strike in maroon rescued a point.
It followed another disappointing showing away at Queen of the South in their previous outing in which the Jambos relied on a late Liam Boyce penalty to salvage something from the contest.
The trip to the Highlands has been put into perspective by the record ‘virtual’ crowd set to tune in to the clash online amid Tynecastle legend John Robertson’s decision to request compassionate leave from his role as Caley boss after a family bereavement.
Kingsley, who has five goals from left back this season since arriving from Hull City in the summer, admitted that performances had not hit the level required for the Championship leaders.
But he maintained the Gorgie side are on the cusp of another run in the final ten games of the season when they could rejoin Scottish football’s top table should they continue their lead at the top of the second tier.
“I think it’s football, sometimes you go through a spell where you are creating chances and you’re just not getting on the end of them and putting them away,” he said in his pre-match press conference.
“But I think it would be more concerning if we weren’t getting those chances, so hopefully we can start putting them away.
“The way we played on Saturday past, it was really frustrating not to win the game with the amount of chances we had.
“The last couple of games, we know we should be doing a lot better, the scores should be better, but we’ve got a big chance on Friday to put that right.”
He added: “The challenge for us over the next wee while is to break these teams down. We have been getting the chances, it’s just that final five per cent which is putting them away.”
