Hearts cult hero Pasquale Bruno reveals the Ballon d'Or winners he threatened to maim and murder

There haven't been many football careers that have taken in both Juventus and Cowdenbeath.

Hearts cult hero Pasquale Bruno wasn't an ordinary footballer though, with the Italian famed for his uncompromising style on the pitch.

Serie A defenders aren't known for being shrinking violets in general, so the fact Bruno was nicknamed 'The Animal' tells you all you need to know about the centre-back.

It's probably also worth noting that the nickname was bestowed upon him in 'honour' of a vicious Camorra killer.

Italian sports writer Adalberto Bortolotti described Bruno as “not violent, but an exhibitionist of violence”, and he certainly put on a show in Scotland.

He was one of four Hearts players sent off in a defeat at Ibrox, and famously booted Hibs ' Keith Wright in the stomach during an Edinburgh derby.

Raith Rovers striker Ally Graham recalled being punched off the ball by Bruno and seeking him out after the match for a fight.

Legend has it that Bruno simply smiled and said “with me there is no fight, I simply call my friends and… boom”. This was accompanied with a gun gesture.

A nervous Graham decided that Bruno was probably joking, but nonetheless opted not to pursue his grievance any further.

It was in Italy where he really made his name though, and the former Jambo has been reminiscing on his clashes with some global superstars.

In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Bruno was asked about an incident where Marco van Basten had the temerity to dance in front of him in celebration.

He recalled: "It was February 26 1992 and I had scored an own goal against Milan in the Coppa Italia.

"I was on the ground, distraught, with my hands over my face.

"I only understood (what Van Basten had done) by the reaction of my team-mates.

"I got up, grabbed Van Basten by the hair and I said to him: 'Now I'm going to end your career'.

"(Fabio) Capello sensed the atmosphere and took him off straight away.

"As he went off I shouted after him: 'you coward, stay!'.

"The game became a manhunt. I smashed (Carlo) Ancelotti several times, four or five criminal offences. To this day I don't know why (him)."

And Van Basten isn't the only Ballon d'Or winner Bruno had a run-in with, as he famously clashed with Juventus superstar Roberto Baggio while playing for city rivals Torino.

Bruno admits: "I never patched things up with Baggio. We hated each other.

"The time we got sent off at the same time, he came to see me in the dressing room. He was being held back by the masseur.

"I said: 'take him away or I'll kill him'."
