Hearts could be handed Premiership reprieve as SPFL consult clubs on 14-team top flight

Hearts could be set for a dramatic reprieve as they bid to remain in the Premiership.

Owner Ann Budge has been pushing for league reconstruction, and it now appears that a 14-team top flight is on the table.

SPFL chief Neil Doncaster is reported to have sent a letter to clubs from the top two leagues asking if they would back the idea.

According to BBC Scotland, responses to the letter are due by 5pm on Friday.

Doncaster is said to have asked the clubs for their thoughts on a 14-team top flight starting from next season, and whether increasing the size of the Premiership for the next five years might be "more palatable".

Under Budge's proposal, Caley Thistle would be promoted and Hearts would avoid relegation to the Championship.

Meanwhile, the SPFL have confirmed that Scottish football fans will be able to watch their team with 'virtual season tickets'.

A statement released by the SPFL on Wednesday afternoon read: "The Scottish Premiership clubs will create a ‘virtual season ticket’ for the 2020/21 season, providing an alternative source of matchday income while social distancing measures prevent fans from attending matches.

"During the 2020/21 season, each Premiership club will be able to sell a package to season ticket holders to watch all home games.
