Hearts confirm Aaron Hughes exit on the same day he is included in Northern Ireland squad

Hearts have confirmed that Aaron Hughes has left Tynecastle.

Craig Levein's side finished sixth in last season's Scottish Premiership and reached the Scottish Cup Final, where they lost 2-1 to Celtic.

Veteran Northern Ireland defender Hughes arrived at Hearts in January 2017.

The 39-year-old made 42 appearances during his time in Scotland.

Hughes' departure was announced on the same day he was for the forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Estonia and Belarus.

The former Newcastle United and Fulham defender has 112 caps for his country, making him Britain's most capped defender.

Meanwhile, Hearts loan signings Demetri Mitchell (Manchester United) and Conor Shaughnessy (Leeds United) have returned to their parent clubs.

Republic of Ireland under-21 international Shaughnessy made 11 appearances after arriving in January of this year.

Conor Sammon signed in June 2016 and went on to make just 27 appearances in three years at the club, scoring twice. The 32-year-old spent time on loan at Kilmarnock, Partick Thistle and Motherwell.

A Hearts spokesman said: "The club would like to thank everyone for their efforts at Hearts and wish them well in the future."
