Hearts boss Robbie Neilson makes Championship testing plea following Scottish Government cash injection

Robbie Neilson insists every Championship club would have to start testing for Covid if the Scottish Government were to bring it back in for the lower leagues.

Currently, only top flight clubs are required to undergo twice weekly testing to ensure Scottish Premiership fixtures can go ahead.

Those outwith the top 12 are exempt, although Hearts did opt to test their players ahead of games earlier in the season.

However, with much of Scotland set to be plunged into tier four from Boxing Day, there are fears that these stricter protocols could find their way into football in order to keep the game going.

However, Neilson called for that to be applied to all clubs after the Scottish Government announced a £10million emergency support package for all Scottish Championship, League One and League Two clubs.

“It would need to be across the whole league,” said Neilson. “I don’t think you could have one or two teams testing and others not.

“If it’s something the SFA or the Government wanted to bring in then it;s definitely something we would think about and talk about.

“There is a huge financial expense to it, however we’ve just received a decent sum in the Championship so there is the finances to do it.

“I’m sure there are teams that will be using it for wages and varying different things but from our perspective, if that’s the way it goes then that’s the way it goes.

“Hopefully it doesn’t get to that stage.”
