Hearts boss Robbie Neilson expects powderkeg Hibs derby atmosphere with composure being key

Robbie Neilson believes this weekend's Edinburgh derby will be as intense as ever and will come down to which side can gain their composure first.

The Hearts manager has been excited about the prospect of the first rivalry of the campaign and expects a raucous atmosphere.

With both his side and Hibs currently unbeaten in the league at this moment it's the two joint-top outfits doing battle at Tynecastle.

But while he expects a ding-dong scrap on the pitch he hopes his charges can keep their cool as that could prove vital in the hunt for three points come 3pm on Sunday afternoon.

"One of things we have noticed recently, even just turning up the game before it - you get there an hour and half before the game and you see the fans about, which we didn’t have for 14, 15 months," Neilson said.

“To have that, even more so on Sunday, when you see the Hearts fans and stadiums starts to fill up during the warm up, I think intensity will be there right from the start, as it always is in the derby.

“It’s 200 miles an hour and it’s what team can calm it down first.

“It’s two Edinburgh teams at the top of the league, which is fantastic for Edinburgh, we hope to still be at the top of the league at the end of it but I know Hibs have had a really good start as well and had a European campaign and had a couple of good results in that.

“From our perspective it’s another big challenge for us, we’ve had Celtic at home and Aberdeen at home and now it’s Hibs at home and I hope we get another three points.

“It’s two teams that play good attacking football, two teams that have had a great start to the season and we think we have enough to win the game but we have to go and prove it.”

Neilson is ready to unleash new signing Barrie McKay on Hibs this weekend and admits he is content with his side's transfer business this summer.

And, speaking to Sky Sports, the former Dundee Utd boss explained that having a strong squad can help Hearts finish higher than their challengers.

"I always expect Hearts to be in the top six challenging for the European places and our objective is to get regular European football and I would like to start it this season," he added.

“It’s an objective for us all, I would like to think Aberdeen and Hibs, even Dundee United, some of the other teams are the same, we want to challenge the top of the league.

“We know it’s difficult to sustain a challenge but we feel we’ve built a really good squad that has a lot of cover in different areas, that will give ourselves the best chance to be near that top end.”
