Hearts and Hibs won't return to action until June at earliest as football shutdown extended

Hearts and Hibs won't return to action for at least another two months after the Scottish football shutdown was extended.

Bosses at the SPFL and SFA notified clubs today (Thursday) that action wouldn't be resuming until June 10 at the earliest. That's a six week extension on to the previous date of April 30.

Training sessions have also been shut down until June.

The announcement was made just a day before clubs get set to vote on proposals to end the Scottish Championship, League One and League Two.

The SPFL resolution proposes that the three leagues be drawn to a conclusion now with the final standings decided on an average points per game system.

Hearts have already indicated that they were in opposition to the proposals.

Owner Ann Budge issued a statement on Wednesday evening in which she said the club would be voting against the plan, while also issuing a fresh call for league reconstruction talks.

Confirming the decision to extend the shutdown, Rod Petrie, Scottish FA President said: "The message is very clear: the government restrictions introduced to save lives must be adhered to and there is no prospect of an early resumption of training let alone organised football in Scotland for several weeks.

"The decision to suspend all football until at least 10 June is to help clubs ensure the safety and wellbeing of players, staff and supporters as well as take steps to mitigate their costs.

"Scottish football applauds everyone working within NHS Scotland and the care sector and should place no additional burden at a time when their resources are being tested to the limit because of COVID-19."
