Hearts and Hibs set to be balloted over October Betfred Cup kick off

Scottish clubs are set to be balloted over plans to kick off the Betfred Cup in October, according to reports.

Hearts and Hibernian could be asked to vote on whether the competition - which was due to start this month - should begin at a later date.

The SPFL will write to all 42 member clubs, plus Highland and Lowland league champions Kelty Hearts and Brora Rangers, to outline plans for the tournament, which has been postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Daily Record reports the weekend of October 6 has been mooted as the start of the competition - just over a week before the Jambos are due to start their Championship campaign.

League bosses reportedly want to know which clubs from the three lower divisions will be ready to participate in cup games during the October international break.

However, several sides have warned of serious monetary issues if they are forced to start the season behind closed doors.

Clubs may be allowed to opt out of this year’s competition if they determine it is financially unviable to participate.

Both Hearts and Hibs reached the semi-final stage of the tournament last year, however suffered defeats against Rangers and eventual winners Celtic at Hampden.
