Hearts and Championship rivals facing fixture pile up as Storm Darcy whiteout continues

Hearts and their Championship rivals could be facing a fixture pile up as the Scottish football whiteout continues.

Storm Darcy has seen the country covered in a blanket of snow this week and it’s already been taking its toll on the second tier fixture cards.

Dundee’s scheduled meeting with Inverness at Dens on Saturday was postponed, as was Tuesday night’s game against Ayr United.

Inverness’ wait to play a first home fixture of 2021 continues as their clash against Alloa this evening has unsurprisingly fallen foul of the weather.

Robbie Neilson ’s league leaders have managed to avoid any call-offs so far, and Friday night’s game against Queen of the South is at least on an artificial surface.

However, as we’ve already seen at Livingston this season, they aren’t immune to freezing so there’s still no guarantee that the match at Palmerston will definitely go ahead should the snow continue over the next three days.

Hearts then host Morton at Tynecastle a week on Saturday, which shouldn’t be in much danger given the the stadium’s undersoil heating.

However, they are then due in the Highlands for their record breaking fixture against Inverness and with no guarantee of temperature’s dropping significantly this month, all eyes will be on the thermometers for the next couple of weeks or so.

Hearts fans have helped smash the club’s highest ever attendance record by snapping up over 7,500 virtual tickets for the game, despite it being played behind closed doors.

There’s also the small matter of the Scottish Cup.

The SFA’s flagship competition has been put on hold with Leagues One and Two in cold storage until at least 1 March.

Hearts have still to play their second round tie against Brora Rangers before the third round encounter with Stranraer can even be thought about.

But with the big freeze putting the squeeze on an already complicated fixture list, it’s hard to see where the cup games can be fitted in.
