Heartless vandals trash life-line community food bank for vulnerable families

Heartless yobs have trashed a community centre which provides a food bank and clothes for vulnerable families.

Staff and volunteers said they are "devastated" after the vandals broke in and damaged the garden of Fazakerley Community Library.

The library is part of the Fazakerley Community Federation Centre and many vital services are held there - including a Scouse kitchen offering free hot food to people.

The library garden plays a huge role in the community and is used on a daily basis for deprived children and people with mental health problems.

Maureen Delahunty, community co-ordinator of the Fazakerley Federation Centre, said:  "We are devastated.

"Our volunteers had been busy getting [the garden] ready for summer.

"They have broken into the shed an smashed stuff up all over the garden.

"We already have a meeting on 23rd May about the rise in anti-social behaviour with police and Sports Alive as it's a real problem.

"We have got everything [in the garden] from child minders who plant with the kids, a mens shed for men with mental health needs.

"We have got a children in need group three times a week.

"Lots of the kids don't have green space, so they go out and learn about the environment, have a drink and a snack outside.

"It's all kept nice by volunteers. We rely on them and it's been trampled on.

"The library manager is so upset."

Rona Heron, library manager, said the facility was a "much needed asset" to the community and blasted those responsible in a passionate Facebook post.

She said: "To the scum who thought it would be good to break into our beautiful garden over the weekend and wreck it I hope karma visits you very soon!!!!!

"Fazakerley Community Fed and Fazakerley Community Library try our best to help everyone as much as we physically can.

"In addition to our day to day service and timetable of groups and activities (which are FREE) we even support our community through financial difficulty, well-being matters, clothes bank, food bank, homework support, bring the elderly together to avoid isolation, we even offer a FREE hot meal on the table for the whole family every Thursday and this week we will embark on a huge 'Community Clean UP' (Wednesday) for you, to make your area nice where YOU live because we care about you.

"WE sought the funding for the clean up day, not the City Council, not Cobalt but our team here.

"To those who continue to support what we do, we thank you very much."

Fazakerley library's advice centre has provided a life-line to people since the roll-out of universal credit , with queues often out the door, according to staff.

Ms Heron's statement was met by an outpouring of support from local people, who condemned the vandalism as "horrible" and "absolutely disgusting".

Staff believe youths were behind the incident and say kids have been seen climbing on the roof of the library late at night.

Merseyside Police have been contacted for comment.
