Heartless thieves steal daffodils from a devoted pensioner's memorial garden laid in memory of his wife

Heartless thieves stole daffodils from a County Durham pensioner’s garden that were planted in memory of his late wife.

Peter Spence had planted the flowers in a memorial garden at his home in the Coatham Mundeville in Darlington.

But two men were seen digging up two buckets full at around 10.45am on Saturday, April 11.

When approached, the two men shouted abuse at Mr Spence before driving off in a grey Mazda with the daffodils.

Now, thanks to kind-hearted staff at Aldi on North Road, Darlington, Mr Spence has received a special delivery of daffodils.

PC Tombling, of Durham Constabulary, delivered the flowers to his home.

He said: “The gentleman had planted these daffodils in memory of his wife and he doesn’t mind if people pick the odd one, in fact it brings him joy.

“But in this instance he felt this was excessive and causing unnecessary damage.

“He is delighted we have been able to provide him with some replacement daffodils.”

Anyone with any information about the theft is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident reference 144 of April 11.
