Heartless thieves smash door and raid Shelter charity shop in West Bridgford

Heartless thieves raided a safe after smashing their way into a Shelter charity shop in West Bridgford.

The shop in Tudor Square, which was burgled in the early hours of Wednesday, August 7, helps to raise money to support those who are homeless.

Michelle Deacon, who has been the manager since March 2018, said the incident has left her "saddened and disappointed".

"We've not had any problems before," she told Nottinghamshire Live.

"It's made me fell saddened and disappointed that someone would target a charity shop, not just because it has happened to me.

"Money was taken from the safe. I've got to close today because we've got to get the locks changed on the safe and repair the door.

"We're going to lose money today."

Officers investigating said the offenders searched the premises, took money from the safe and fled through the fire door which leads onto Rectory Road.

Around 30 volunteers work at the charity shop, the manager said, many of whom are doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award and come from local schools.

"It was a shock this morning," Michelle added.

"I have spoken to the police and they are going to do their best with what little they have got to go on.

"But that's life and you just have to get on with it. Hopefully people who have supported us will continue to support us in the future."

Nottinghamshire Police is now appealing for information and witnesses.

A spokesman for the force said: "Nottinghamshire Police is appealing for information and witnesses following a burglary in West Bridgford.

"Officers were called to the Shelter charity shop in Tudor Square, West Bridgford, Nottingham, at around 7:30am on Wednesday 7 August 2019 following reports of a burglary.

"It is believed glass of the front door was smashed to gain entry before cash was taken from a secure safe.

"If you have any information or witnessed the incident, please call 101 and quote incident number 103 of 7 August 2019."
